Gateway

Gateway was founded in 1985 by Ted Waitt & Mike Hammond, It went by the name TIPC Network between the years of 1985 to 1987, before being renamed Gateway 2000 in 1987 to 1998. In 1998, the company would rename itself again to just Gateway. Instead of selling computers to customers via stores, Gateway would sell computers through alternative means such as Mail-order, Telephone orders, and eventually, through the internet. Gateway would eventually start a Retail chain where they would show their computers, give tutorials, and assist in ordering, seeing as they had no stock of actual units to sell.

Gateway was known for offering highly customizable computers, with a wide range of parts to choose from, and often had software bundles available such as Educational Titles, Games, and Productivity software. They were also known for their fairly low prices.

In 2004, Gateway acquired their biggest rival, eMachines for 50 million shares of Gateway stock and 30 Million dollars. Wayne Inouye, Then current CEO of eMachines would become CEO of Gateway, with Gateway's founder Ted Waitt stepping down. By 2005 however, it was clear that the increased competition from Dell and other computer companies was making both companies struggle to compete, by 2007, Gateway (And by extension, eMachines) Was sold to Acer.

Gateway would largely disappear from the computing industry shortly after being sold to Acer. The Gateway Country retail stores would be shut down, resulting in 2,500 employees losing their jobs. Instead, Gateway computers would be sold through third-party retailers, Like how eMachines was sold, but eventually, the computers would be removed entirely from stores and the company thought dead...

Until September 2020, that is. Gateway would come back as a brand, sold exclusively in Walmart stores. Acer has licensed the brand to Bmorn Technology Group, a Chinese Mid-range computer company, also known for EVOO Computers, which are known for extremely low prices. The laptops and computers aren't reviewed very well. A sad fate indeed.
